THE ETERNAL WINEGROWING
Back than
The “Wingerte” (vineyards), which have melted into very small plots through the division of estates, gain uniqueness and immeasurable added value through land consolidation.
In the following decades, excellent locations came into the possession of the winery. Approx. 40,000 true root vines, with a current average age of over 60 years. These can only be found in the best steepest areas of the Moselle region.
The locations spared from land consolidation in the original part of the mountain bear great names:
“TRITTENHEIMER APOTHEKE, ROSE GARDEN & LAURENTIUSLAY”.
The noble wines from father’s cellar inspired Gerhard Manfred Eifel, the son of the winegrower family. Already at the age of 14 years he begins to work actively in the vineyard. The archive wines in the treasure chamber arouse his passion for collecting. Soon he is allowed to press and bottle his first vintage, which was aged under supervision in 1974.
Today
In 2017 Gerhard Eifel acquires another 100 year old Riesling steep slope with 75 % gradient. The Klüsserath Brotherhood, an absolute southern slope.
Machines are undesirable at the Clüsserath-Eifel Winery. The animal world is to be respected, as well as the natural water supply in the underground of the steep slopes and many other aspects. Ethical norms and values are an unwritten law of eternal viticulture. The environmentally friendly processing of the vines, which extend with roots up to 20 metres deep in the slate rocks, is a top priority. The roots allow for the special minerality of the wines and ensure the survival of the vines in incandescent summer heat.
Tomorrow
With the right sense of value for what wine means, Gerhard Eifel always finds new ways to take wine lovers on his idea journeys. For 10 years the enthusiastic guests accompanied a Riesling Gala, at which up to 30 different wines from nine decades, in combination with eight courses from the kitchens of the best-known German chefs, were presented.
Often the youngest of three wines, which he handed to a court, was 50 years younger than the oldest and in 1999 he even served his guests a plant from the year 1899 in front of the television camera.
His knowledge of wine from original locations, his knowledge of how to cultivate, mature and store good wines has become his own legend. Riesling flows in his veins.
